Balfour Beatty appointed on £60 million York College redevelopment

27/09/2005

York College has appointed Balfour Beatty Construction Ltd to develop a new £60 million, 30,000 sq m (322,920 sq ft) facility at its Sim Balk Lane site, on the south western gateway to the city. Work has started on site and there is an anticipated completion date of mid July 2007.

John Keyes, Partner at GVA Grimley, project manager and advisor to York College comments, "The college decanted all its operations into its Tadcaster Road site this Summer, freeing up the Sim Balk Lane site for redevelopment. Once the new facility is up and running in September 2007, the Tadcaster Road site will be redeveloped for residential use.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for the college to move into purpose-built, state-of-the-art premises and the design has been met with enthusiasm by staff and students alike."

Funding for the new college will be financed by the sale of the college’s Tadcaster Road site, which is to be used for housing, plus a major grant from the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and significant funding from York College itself.

Mike Galloway, Principal of York College comments, "York can now look forward to a new state-of-the-art college, bringing social and economic benefits to the city. The new college will provide a massive boost to further and higher education in York and North Yorkshire and we are looking forward to opening the doors to our learners in September 2007."

Balfour Beatty Construction Director, Kevin Donegan, comments, ‘"We are delighted to be working with York College to provide a new College with a greatly enhanced education environment through the design and construction of modern buildings and facilities. We look forward to delivering the facility to the staff and students in Autumn 2007."

John Bryan, Director at Bond Bryan LLP (architects) comments, "This will be a landmark building for the college and for further education in the region. The students will be able to learn in modern and flexible ways in a building of excitement and inspiration."
