Carbo Holdings – mixing plant, Leonberg

Project outline

Abrasive manufacturer, Carbo Holdings GmbH, produce grinding wheels and abrasive sheet and discs from plants in Düsseldorf, Hannoversch Munden in Saxony and Leonberg near Stuttgart. Carbo had recently closed its plant in Manchester and much of the production had been transferred to the German plants. Within the process of financial restructuring, Carbo required valuations of its plant and machinery at the three plants, together with finished goods stock of ‘jumbo’, three metre wide rolls of abrasive sheet, finish cut product and grinding wheels. Valuations of the company’s stocks of raw materials were also required.

GVA Grimley was instructed to provide the valuations, in formats acceptable to Carbo’s funders on all plant and machinery, raw material and finished stock.

How GVA Grimley added value

GVA Grimley proposed that only major items of plant at the three sites should be valued, as these assets held the major portion of the total value of Carbo’s assets. This approach held the cost of the exercise down and enabled the valuation to be prepared quickly. A valuation team visited the three sites in the course of one week and took detailed information of the major plant items. These were dictated each night from Germany to a recording system in the UK, allowing the inventories to be ready for processing and valuation when the team returned.

Detailed stock reports were also collected from Carbo and stock control and production programming personnel were interviewed in Germany. Research into market values of the plant, (much of which was bespoke) was completed in one week, and GVA Grimley was able to submit draft reports within two weeks of arriving in Germany. Final reports were issued to Carbo’s funders one week later.
